The EMS (Energy Management System) is the key element of the ship and provides the best control platform for hybrid technology. The integration between Frequency Converters and Batteries is done to achieve the following main objectives.
Betesan-EMS software controls and monitors the ship’s power supply while managing the energy supply from various power sources (main diesel and CNG engines, batteries, and solar panels) in real-time.
Functions
EMS provides different operating modes:
- Peak shaving
- Stability of generator power levels.
- Generator power variations are allowed and ramp-controlled to ensure dynamic peak shaving, optimizing the use of batteries.
- Power increase
- Spinning reserve. In the event of a main engine/generator loss:
- Propulsion is unaffected as it is powered by propulsion batteries.
- Power outages are prevented. Thanks to high-speed frequency detection in frequency converters and AFE’s power flow inverter capability, energy from the batteries can be supplied to the MSB.
- Shore connection ability for battery charging:
- Battery charging mode during transit.
- Night charging mode for battery charging when docked at ports.
- Large sizing of ESS. According to EMS optimization strategy.
- Other operating modes:
- Fully electric ship operation powered by batteries.
- Ship operation using diesel.
- Ship operation using CNG.
Benefits
- Reduce fuel consumption.
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions and noise levels.
- Reduce engine maintenance costs.
- Achieve higher energy efficiency.
- Increase operational reliability and safety.
